William Lloyd Garrison, the “Negro Champion”

In October, 1833, after Garrison returned from his trip to the UK, a handbill, BOSTONIANS AWAKE!, is circulated in Boston.  It calls attention that Garrison has been in England on a “disgraceful mission to the British metropolis …. he has slandered the Americans.. . also countenancing the outrageous conduct of Daniel O’Connell….He is now in your power… do not let him escape …. go out this evening armed with plenty of tar and feathers and administer him justice at his abode at No. 9 Merchants Hall, Congress St…”  Signed simply, A NORTH ENDER.
